Final Fantasy Versus XIII (XIII Fainaru Fantaji Verusasu Satin?) is an upcoming action role-playing game[4] published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 3[5][6] and currently being developed by the company's 1st Production Department.[1] Alongside Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Final Fantasy Type-0, the game is a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series. Unveiled at E3 2006,[7] the game focuses on the mysterious Noctis Lucis Caelum, the last heir of a dynasty ruling over the only remaining city to control crystals. Under unforeseen circumstances, he makes a stand against opposing kingdoms seeking to take the crystal as their own.[8]
According to its developers, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a completely independent game, with different story, characters and visual design. Although set within the same Final Fantasy XIII universe and mythology, Versus XIII is unrelated to (and is thus neither sequel nor prequel to) any other Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy games.[9]
Initially announced with a trailer in May 2006, the game has been noted for its protracted development time; with no set release date as of May 2012, and reports that the game will not appear at E3 2012, some commentators have labelled the game vaporware.
